FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about roof leaks, storm and hail damage, insurance, and how Roof Repair Line works.

About the service

Is Roof Repair Line a roofing company?

No. Roof Repair Line is a referral service. When the phone line is active, a call is connected to an independent roofing company that serves your area. That company, not Roof Repair Line, inspects the roof, quotes the work, and does any repair you agree to.

Does it cost anything to use this service?

There’s no charge for the referral. If you hire a roofer, you pay that company directly for its work, at a price you agree on with them.

Do you cover my area?

Coverage depends on your ZIP code and on which roofing companies are taking calls at the time. Roof Repair Line doesn’t serve every U.S. location, so a connection can’t be promised everywhere.

Can someone come out today?

That depends on the roofer’s schedule, the weather, and demand in your area. Ask the company directly when you’re connected. Roof Repair Line can’t promise a response time.

Should I put a tarp on the roof myself?

Climbing onto a wet or damaged roof isn’t recommended. A roofer can tell you whether temporary protection, such as a tarp, is needed.

Do you work on commercial buildings?

No. Roof Repair Line is for residential roofs only.

Am I obligated to hire the roofer I talk to?

No. You decide whether to hire anyone. Ask for a written scope, price, and contract before work begins.

Is Roof Repair Line paid for calls?

Roof Repair Line may be paid by participating companies or partners for calls. There’s no charge to you for the referral.

Roof leaks

Is a roof leak an emergency?

Water coming into the house, a sagging ceiling, or water near light fixtures should be treated as urgent. A small stain that isn’t changing may be less urgent, but leaks don’t fix themselves, so have a roofer look at it.

Why is my roof still leaking after a repair?

The repair may not have reached the actual entry point, or there may be more than one. Call the company that did the work first and ask them to recheck it.

Can a ceiling stain come from something other than the roof?

Yes. Attic condensation, plumbing, and HVAC lines can all stain ceilings. A roofer can tell you if the roof isn’t the source.

Should I patch the leak myself?

Going on the roof isn’t recommended. You can limit damage from inside by catching water and moving belongings while a professional handles the roof.

Will insurance cover a roof leak?

It depends on your policy and the cause. Roof Repair Line can’t determine coverage or help with claims. Contact your insurer or agent, and keep your photos and notes.

Storm and wind damage

How soon should I have storm damage looked at?

If shingles are missing or water is coming in, try to get a roofer out before the next rain. Minor damage can usually be scheduled, but don’t leave it for months.

One or two shingles blew off. Does that matter?

It can. A missing shingle exposes the layers underneath to water. A roofer can replace it and check whether nearby shingles were loosened.

Should I contact my insurer or a roofer first?

That’s your choice. You can document the damage, contact your insurer, and have a roofer assess the roof in whatever order works for you. Roof Repair Line can’t tell you what your policy covers.

Can I put a tarp on the roof myself?

It isn’t recommended. Climbing a wet or damaged roof is dangerous. Ask the roofer whether temporary protection is needed.

Hail damage

What size hail damages a roof?

There’s no single answer. Whether hail damages a roof depends on the storm and the roof, and only an inspection can tell.

Can hail cause roof leaks?

It can if it damages shingles, flashing, or skylights enough to let water in. If you see a leak after a hailstorm, see roof leak repair.

Should I get my roof inspected even if I don’t see damage?

If a significant hailstorm hit your area, an inspection can tell you whether there’s damage you can’t see from the ground. It’s your call.

Do I need a new roof after hail?

Not necessarily. Depending on what an inspection finds, a roof may need a repair, a replacement, or no work at all.

Will insurance pay for hail damage?

That depends on your policy and what the inspection finds. Roof Repair Line can’t determine coverage. Contact your insurer or agent.

Insurance

Does homeowners insurance cover a roof leak?

It depends on your policy and the cause. A leak from a covered event, such as storm damage, may be treated differently from one caused by wear or lack of maintenance. Your insurer decides under your policy. See the insurance guide.

Should I repair the roof before the insurer looks at it?

Protect the home from further damage and keep receipts. Ask your insurer before doing more than temporary work, and leave anything on the roof to a professional.

Can Roof Repair Line help with my claim?

No. Roof Repair Line doesn’t handle insurance claims or give coverage advice.
